Just three miles north of Mountain Gate RV Park, Shasta Lake is home to some and the very best and beautiful fishing Northern California can offer. The countryside out here is simply gorgeous - a verdant landscape rolling toward Mt Shasta to the North. Whether you're out on the water or casting from the shore, you'd be hard pressed to find a more perfect fishing hole anywhere in the country. From local and national tournaments to our sheer variety of species, any fisherman is sure to find a good catch waiting for the right cast.

Shasta Lake Fishing Tournaments

Stay at to Mountain Gate RV Park for the 7th annual Shasta Lake Trout Derby this October 13 and 14. Think you can best last year's 10.59 pound pair winner? Shasta Lake is home to some of the finest rainbow and brown trout in the country, and pulling home two trout at more than 11 pounds total could be the crowning achievement of your tournament season. The $100 dollar entry fee includes a steak or chicken dinner, a trout derby t-shirt, and the opportunity to win the $2500 first prize. This tournament awards prizes all the way through 25th place! This is the perfect season to pick up the big eaters that have been stocking up for the colder, less active winter months. The average Shasta trout this time of year comes in at 18" long, weighing around three pounds, plenty of weight to bend the rod and pull out some line.

Serious tournament anglers can participate in the many USDA sponsored fishing events Shasta Lake holds each year. Check out the American Bass - California tournament series several times a year, or be sure to look into the Future Pro Tour. Shasta's long tournament list is a testament to the healthy population of largemouth, spotted, and smallmouth bass. You're also sure to spot crappie, catfish, squawfish, and sturgeons in magnificent Redding, California. Whether you're here for the win or to watch some of the best, Shasta's tournament fishing schedule could keep any angling enthusiast out on the water all day long.

Family Fishing

Of course, we don't all fish for tournaments. The leisurely fisherman can easily find a spot among the frequent tournament angling season. Feel free to pick up one of the local fishing guides to find some great shad schools, or simply work the lake as you please. Early spring is prime time bank fishing for chinook salmon and rainbow and brown trout. Take the rest of the spring and your early summer to catch your bass. Bring out your live bait and some spinners and you'll find spotted bass easy to come by. Catfish bite in the summer, and you can check with the California Department of Fish and Game for good crappie cycles. All the year round you'll find bass hitting or squawfish coming around for a bite. With warm water and coldwater species, fishing here will always be busy.

Where to stay
